The Tudor Trust has awarded us 2 years running costs to deliver cookery workshops to people over the age of 50, across Dorset, Bournemouth and Poole. The project will engage with people over the age of 50 who have faced a change in their circumstances; this may be bereavement, illness or taking on the role of carer etc. This project is aimed at improving older people’s abilities and confidence to cook healthy meals from scratch and also aims to increase well being through social interaction. The project will develop and expand the work undertaken during the POPP funding, delivering to specific groups over a wider area. If you are a group / housing association / organisation or an individual who would like to see this type of event in your local area please contact us here. .............................................................................
Incredible Edibles Weaning Resource - Training and Evaluation Further training will be delivered to Health Professionals and Children's Centre staff on using the Incredible Edibles Tool Kit, to enable them to deliver workshops and give advice and support to parents undergoing the weaning process with their children. We will also be evaluating how the Incredible Edibles Tool Kits are being used by Health Professionals, and how useful new parents are finding the sessions and the Parent Packs. F.A.B. (Food, Activity, Behaviour) Interventions aimed at 2-4 year olds and their parents will run between April 2009 and March 2010. A series of 6 x five week courses (2 in each location) will be held at Children's Centres in Christchurch, Shaftesbury and Weymouth. This pilot project will cover issues such as healthy eating and portion sizes, dealing with fussy eaters, physical activites, cooking together, non TV activities for toddlers and behaviour and tantrum management around food. Schools Workshops School based healthy eating activites will be held in identified Dorset schools that are working towards 'healthy schools plus', with obesity identified as their main theme. This work covers two main areas; working with children during school time and cookery workshops aimed at parents. What's in Yours? - Children's Workshops The children will learn about the balance of good health using the FSA's eatwell plate, food labelling, healthy snacks, healthy lunchbox ideas and will be able to take part in food tastings. Parents will be involved where appropriate too. F.A.S.T. (Fresh, Affordable, Simple, Tasty) Food - Parents Cookery Workshops Parents will have the opportunity to learn how to cook from scratch with the emphasis being on using fresh produce to create healthier and more cost effective versions of popular ready meals. They will also look at reading food labels and understanding the traffic light labelling system. .............................................................................
We have been awarded a 3 year contract which will see our Project Workers working directly with year 4 children in selected Poole and Bournemouth schools, following them through to year 6 to monitor changes in eating patterns and behaviour.
We will be working closely with dietitians from Bournemouth and Poole Community Health Services who will work with 48 families over the 3 years with detailed intervention. The aim is to work with children who are overweight or obese, or who have self reported poor dietary habits which are coupled with familial obesity.
